SETUP GUIDE
Restaurant POS Hardware Guide
What you actually need to get TakoRos running — no expensive proprietary hardware required.
⏱ 7 min read
Most POS companies lock you into expensive proprietary hardware. TakoRos runs on standard Android devicesyou can buy from any electronics store. This guide lists exactly what you need, what specs matter, and what's optional.
The TakoPOS Tablet (Required)
This is the main order-entry device — the staff-operated tablet at the counter. It's the hub everything routes through.
Recommended specs:
- Android 10 or higher
- 10.1" screen or larger (11–12" is ideal for busy counters)
- 3GB RAM minimum, 4GB+ recommended
- 32GB storage minimum
- Mid-range processor — flagship not needed
- Sturdy build — it'll get grease, water, and drops
💡 Wall mount or stand?
A counter stand keeps the tablet secure and at the right angle. Most restaurants use a 360° rotating stand — around MUR 500–800 locally.
TakoKDS Device (Strongly Recommended)
TakoKDS runs on an Android TV box connected to any HDMI display — a TV, a commercial monitor, or even an old screen. You do not need a smart TV.
What you need:
- Any Android TV box (mainstream brand)
- Any HDMI display, 32" or larger recommended for readability from 3–4 metres
- Ethernet connection preferred for kitchen environments (wifi can be unreliable in metal-heavy kitchens)
Your WiFi Router — The Most Critical Hardware You'll Overlook
TakoRos works over your local network (LAN). The POS, KDS, kiosk, and table tablets all communicate through your router. A weak or congested router is the single most common cause of perceived slowness.
Minimum:
- Dual-band router (2.4GHz + 5GHz)
- At least 4 LAN ports (or use a network switch)
- Separate SSID for your POS devices — don't share with customer wifi
Recommended:
- Business-grade or prosumer router (TP-Link Archer series, Asus RT series)
- Ethernet cable to the KDS and counter POS — ethernet is always more reliable than wifi for fixed devices
⚠️ ISP routers are usually insufficient
The free router your internet provider supplied is optimised for cost, not reliability. Upgrade it before blaming the POS software.
Receipt Printer (Optional)
TakoRos can print customer receipts via a thermal receipt printer (80mm) connected over Bluetooth, network (LAN/wifi), or USB OTG.
Common choices:
- Epson TM-T20 / TM-T82 series (reliable, widely available)
- Star Micronics mC-Print2 (compact, network-capable)
- Xprinter or similar budget brand (fine for low volume)
Thermal paper rolls are your only ongoing cost — around MUR 10–20 per roll, roughly 60–80 receipts each.
TakoKiosk — Self-Service Kiosk (Optional)
The kiosk app runs on a floor-standing Android tablet enclosure at your restaurant entrance. Customers place their own orders; the order goes directly to TakoPOS and TakoKDS, bypassing counter staff entirely.
Hardware needed:
- 15"–21" Android tablet enclosure, floor-standing
- Card reader slot if you want payment at the kiosk (otherwise customers pay at counter after ordering)
Note: The kiosk is a floor-standing entrance device, not a counter device. It is for customers, not staff.
TakoTable — Table Ordering Tablets (Optional)
TakoRos uses one dedicated Android tablet per table — not QR codes. Customers browse the menu and place orders directly from their table; orders appear on TakoPOS and TakoKDS.
Hardware needed:
- Any 8"–10" Android tablet per table
- Charging dock or always-on power at each table position
- Optional: tamper-proof case to keep customers inside the app
TakoWaiter — Waiter Dashboard (Optional)
A wall-mounted tablet that notifies waiters when orders are ready — triggered automatically when the chef taps complete on TakoKDS. Eliminates shouting and radios.
Hardware needed:
- Any Android tablet, 10"+ preferred
- Wall mount bracket
- Permanent power connection — waiters won't remember to charge it

Start With What You Have
TakoRos works with any Android device you already own. You don't need to buy anything special to get started — just install TakoPOS on any Android tablet and connect it to your account. When you're ready to scale up, add TakoKDS, TakoKiosk, or TakoTable one device at a time.
