What is a Kitchen Display System (KDS)?
The device that replaced the printer — and why every busy kitchen needs one.

Quick Answer
A Kitchen Display System (KDS) is a screen mounted in your kitchen (or bar) that shows incoming orders in real time. When a customer places an order — from the POS, kiosk, or online — it appears instantly on the KDS. No printing, no lost tickets, no shouting.
How a KDS Works
When a customer places an order — at the counter, through a self-service kiosk, or online — the order is sent immediately to the kitchen. On a KDS, that order appears as a ticket card on the screen, showing:
- Every item in the order
- Order source (dine-in, takeaway, delivery)
- Time elapsed since the order was placed
- A LIVE or DELAYEDbadge, turning red if the ticket hasn't been picked up in time
The chef works through the queue, and when an order is ready, they tap the ticket header to mark it complete. That action fires a notification to the waiter dashboard automatically — no radio, no shouting, no paper slip needed.
In TakoRos, one POS order can route to multiple KDS screens simultaneously — the kitchen KDS for hot food and the bar KDS for drinks, at the same time.
KDS vs Paper Tickets: The Real Difference
| KDS | Paper Ticket | |
|---|---|---|
| Order appears in | Under 1 second | 5–30 seconds to print |
| Lost tickets | Never — digital queue | Happens constantly |
| Order age tracking | Built-in timer, color alerts | You watch the clock yourself |
| Multi-station routing | Automatic, simultaneous | Manual — one printer per station |
| Waiter notification | Auto when chef taps complete | Chef shouts or rings bell |
| Consumable cost | Zero | Thermal paper, ink rolls |
| Works offline | Yes (LAN sync) | No internet needed but no sync |
Which Restaurants Benefit Most from a KDS?
A KDS pays off fastest when:
- Your kitchen is separated from the front of house (you can't just shout)
- You run high order volume during lunch or dinner service
- You have multiple order sources — counter + kiosk + online — all hitting the kitchen at once
- You want to track ticket times and identify where delays happen
- You run a bar station separately from the main kitchen
💡 Even small restaurants benefit
A single KDS screen costs less than a commercial receipt printer, uses no consumables, and never triggers the 3pm "we're out of thermal paper" crisis.
What Happens If the Internet Goes Down?
TakoKDS runs on your local network (LAN), not the internet. Orders sync between TakoPOS and TakoKDS over your router — so even during an outage, orders flow normally. When connectivity returns, everything re-syncs to the cloud automatically.
This is different from cloud-only KDS systems that stop working completely when the internet drops.
TakoKDS — Built Into Every TakoRos Plan
TakoKDS is the kitchen display app in the TakoRos ecosystem. It runs on an Android TV box or any HDMI display, shows live tickets with LIVE/DELAYED badges, supports multi-station routing, and notifies your waiter dashboard the moment an order is complete. No extra licensing fee.
